The 4th “Because I am a Girl – Donate a Pencil Campaign” will be held in October

In Hong Kong, children are blessed with the privilege of receiving quality education. Rummaging through their schoolbags, it is not difficult to spot all sorts of fine stationary and textbooks. However, to girls living in developing countries, owning a piece of pencil is a luxury, not to mention the opportunity to go to school. In order to support girls’ education, Plan International Hong Kong is going to organize the 4th “Because I am a Girl – Donate a Pencil Campaign”:

Date: 6th to 10th  October, 2016

Venue:  Telford Plaza I, PopCorn (Pencil bazaar and collection), Maritime Square, Paradise Mall (Pencil collection only)

Opening hours:

6th October: 11am-9pm (Telford Plaza I only);

7th to 10th  October: 11am-9pm

This year, we have increased our pencil collection venues to 4 locations to bring more convenience to the public. You are encouraged to bring along or purchase new pencils (a pack of 2 pencils with a greeting card at $20) on site and donate them to children in developing countries to support their education. You are also welcomed to make donation or sponsor a child at our pencil collection sites. Funds raised will be used to support our anti-child marriage projects in Cambodia. Last year, nearly 20,000 pencils were collected and over $400,000 was raised. The pencils have been sent to underprivileged children in Mainland China and Cambodia, and the funds have been used to support our education projects in Indonesia, Nepal and other countries.

Since the launch of this yearly event, a total of 170,000 pencils were sent to girls in China, Ghana, Nepal and Northern Thailand. The funds raised have been used to support our education and empowerment projects for girls in developing countries.

Plan International “Because I am a Girl” ambassador Stephy Tang participated in our event last year. This year she will continue to support our campaign and help raise awareness of girls’ rights.

Last year, ex-beneficiary cum Plan International ambassador Alfred Cheung, Plan International “Because I am a Girl” ambassadors Cindy Au and Charlene Tse supported our campaign and called on the public to donate pencils.

Apart from joining our pencil donation event on site, you may also donate pencils online. Let’s send children in Cambodia our warm blessings through this meaningful activity!

Plan International has organized “Because I am a Girl – Donate a Pencil Campaign” since 2013 with the aim of supporting girls’ education and bringing lasting changes to their lives.

Girls living in the poorest part of the world often face the double discrimination of gender and age. Their basic human rights are often neglected or exploited, leaving them particularly vulnerable to threats such as early marriage, being deprived of education, or even violence. In fact, when girls’ rights are realized and girls are sent to school, they can release massive potential and bring positive changes to our world. Let’s create a better world for girls together by supporting “Because I am a Girl – Donate a Pencil Campaign”!

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the following sponsors for supporting the 4th “Because I am a Girl– Donate a Pencil Campaign”:
