Plan International Hong Kong’s Board Director Mr. Ralph Szeto, Volunteer Ambassador Stephy Tang, Nicola Cheung, and Lesley Chiang attended the Opening Ceremony of the “Donate a Pencil” Campaign on 21st October 2022 at Olympian City 2. As the guests pulled the switch of the light box together, the campaign name on the lightbox started to glow, signifying the bright future of children brought by education and the launch of this meaningful event. After taking pictures, the guests called for public’s participation, to help improve the learning environment for children in Bangladesh together.

Plan International Hong Kong has been organising the event since 2013. In his welcoming speech, Board Director Mr. Szeto expressed his gratitude to the public, “The campaign has entered its 10th year, I appreciate the generous support from our corporate partners and the public. We have collected over 200,000 pencils and the donation received helped implement our educational works in developing countries.”

Bangladesh, as one of the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, the school life of Bangladeshi children is immensely jeopardised  by frequent floods and storm surges. The pencils collected in this year’s event will be gifted to Bangladeshi children and the needy students in Hong Kong; the fund raised will allow us to carry out the improvement works there which include renovating damaged school buildings due to floods and building clean bathrooms so that students could learn and grow in a safe and healthy environment.

Chief Executive Officer,  Dr. Kanie Siu also shared her trip to Bangladesh in voice navigation. “Over a hundred students are having lessons in a tiny and dark classroom. The floods have already destructed local schools and infrastructure, the lack of hygienic water supply and bathroom facilities have made the situation even more worrying. Therefore, we sincerely appeal the public to support our work in improving the learning environment for the students there.”
