CEO Message (Plan News Issue 29)

Dear Supporters,
Winter chill gives way to the warmth of spring. Over the past three months, we have been deeply involved in long‑term post‑disaster relief efforts in Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, while also closely monitoring the escalating conflict in the Middle East. Although these crises weigh heavily on our hearts, we continue to hold onto the belief that even in the darkest moments, humanity and generosity across every sectors can still bring about meaningful change.
In the Middle East, the situation remains deeply distressing. Homes, schools and hospitals in Lebanon have been badly damaged, and hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced. It is heartbreaking to see so many children whose lives are still in danger. Since the escalation of the conflict, Plan International, working with our partners there, has supported more than 12,290 affected individuals. This included keeping 18 shelters running, distributing hygiene kits and food packages, and providing multi‑purpose cash assistance. We remain committed to standing with the community, because every act of support helps bring a little more stability and hope to the children who need it most.

Back home in Hong Kong, nearly four months have passed since the devastating fire at Wang Fuk Court. Yet, Plan International’s relief efforts have not ceased. Through our Special Cash Assistance Programme, we are providing targeted and timely support to families who are struggling the most. We have also been offering emotional support to the community, with workshops and activities that help affected children and parents express their feelings and gradually work through the trauma. I am truly grateful for the generosity of our donors and corporate partners, as well as the dedication of our local partners and team.
Late last year, we published Hong Kong’s first comprehensive study on period poverty. It brought us face to face with vulnerable girls who felt helpless during their periods due to financial constraints. In response, we launched a fundraising initiative to support their access to menstrual products. This January, my team and I visited Caritas Mother Teresa School to distribute the first batch of Menstrual Kits to 90 girls. Their smiles and the words of the girlas in particular—“Finally, I no longer have to worry about the number of sanitary napkins,”—reminded us why this work matters so much. I also had the chance to speak with several student representatives to better understand their needs and improve our programme going forward.

Meanwhile, our “Be a Change-maker” programme is underway again this year. We recently took 16 enthusiastic secondary school students on a field trip to Laos. It was truly inspiring to witness their passion and curiosity as they embark on this meaningful learning journey. We look forward to seeing how they will transform their experiences into creative action and positive change in their communities.

Thank you, once again, for your steadfast support. It is only because of you that we are able to safeguard the future of every child around the world.
Wishing you peace, good health and every blessing.
