Our Focus on Girls' Rights

Plan International works with children and girls in over 80 countries to help create a world where we are all equal.

Our ambition from 2023 to 2027 is to see All Girls Standing Strong Creating Global Change. It aims to support girls and young women to stand strong by breaking down the barriers and discrimination girls and young women currently face every minute, every hour, and every day.

In the five years, we will continue to work with our partners and supporters, to improve the lives of 200 million girls, enabling them to Learn, Lead, Decide and Thrive.

Learn

All girls have right to receive education and skills needed.
We are working to ensure:
  • Governments invest in more children completing secondary education;
  • Children, especially girls, in conflict and emergency settings are educated in safety;
  • Young people have the knowledge and opportunities to earn and manage money.

Lead

All girls have power to take action on issues that matter to them.
We are working to ensure:
  • Children and young people have a stronger voice;
  • Decision-makers build ways for them to voice their opinions;
  • Governments establish and enforce laws that advance their rights.

Decide

All girls have control over their own lives and bodies.
We are working to ensure:
  • Communities eliminate harmful practices like child marriage and female genital mutilation;
  • Governments act for adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights;
  • Young people have access to quality sexual health services and sex education.

Thrive

All girls have right to grow up cared for and free from violence and fear.
We are working to ensure:
  • They receive the care they need to be healthy, educated and protected;
  • Governments and communities work together to end violence;
  • Governments prevent and respond to violence against children.
Until We Are All Equal

Millions of girls face obstacles and risks that most of us can’t imagine. They include being forced into child marriage and having children too young, suffering serious and life-threatening complications from female genital mutilation and other forms of gender-based violence. It also means going without life-saving food, critical health care, quality education and safe shelter. For years, we have been dedicated to helping girls face various challenges.

We believe that every girl deserves a fair chance at a good life. By challenging the root causes of inequalities, we will drive transformation and secure a better world for all children. We won’t stop until we are all equal.

Why Girls?

Our ongoing research shows that many girls in the developing world face double discrimination because of their gender and age, leaving them to languish at the bottom of the social ladder. They are often denied access to health services and education, and succumb to violence, abuse, and harassment. Working with our partners, young people and supporters, we pledged to promote girls’ voices and visibility, influence major policy outcomes based on their priorities and drive investments in their futures.

Girls’ Power
  • For every extra year a girl stays in school, her future income can increase by 11%
  • When a girl in the developing world receives 7 years of education, she marries 4 years later and has 2.2 fewer, healthier children
  • Globally, if all women completed primary education, there would be 66% fewer maternal deaths
  • If women played an identical role in labour markets to that of men, as much as US$12 trillion could be added to global GDP
The world is waking up to both the plight and the power of girls.
The time for realizing girls’ right has finally come!
