Safeguard Every Child: Child Safeguarding Schools Award Programme Presentation Ceremony and Showcase
Every child deserves a safe and nurturing environment to thrive. Yet, the recent surge in child abuse cases in Hong Kong is deeply alarming. Such abuse can cause profound physical and emotional harm, leaving lifelong scars for children. These incidents occur not only at home but also in schools, tutorial centres, and extracurricular activities, exposing critical gaps in our child protection systems and highlighting the urgent need for stronger preventive measures.
Since 2018, Plan International Hong Kong has been at the forefront of advocating for “Child Safeguarding”. In 2024, with support from the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation, we launched the Child Safeguarding Schools Award Programme, collaborating with nearly 50 early childhood education institutions to build safer learning environments and promote joyful childhoods by prioritising child safety. To celebrate the programme’s achievements and share its positive impacts over the past year, the Child Safeguarding Schools Award Programme Presentation Ceremony and Showcase will be held to commemorate this key milestone in our ongoing efforts to protect children.

Witnessing the Child Safeguarding Milestones at the Ceremony
The ceremony will take place on 12 September (Friday), from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Early childhood education institutions that have actively implemented the “Child Safeguarding Policy” over the past year will be honoured. Legislative Council members, members of the Panel on Children, and school representatives are also invited to share their valuable experiences.
In addition, our Voluntary Activity Ambassadors—celebrities like Tracy Chu, Lisa Cheng, and “Super Dad” Kay Ho—will join us to discuss their personal parenting journeys, encouraging the public to recognise the importance of child safeguarding.

Dive into Interactive Learning at the Showcase
Following the ceremony, the showcase will run from 12 September to 14 September (Friday to Sunday), welcoming parents, children, educators, and all advocates for children’s rights. This engaging event offers immersive experiences designed to deepen participants’ understanding of child safeguarding, encouraging collective action to secure brighter futures for our next generation.
Visitors can explore displays showcasing the accomplishments of schools awarded “Child Safeguarding Achievers”, including how teachers and students have collaborated to create secure environments. A standout feature is the Picture Book Roleplaying, where you will step into the shoes of a detective investigating a fictional child abuse case in a kindergarten. This interactive adventure teaches key skills, such as spotting signs of abuse, responding appropriately, and following proper referral procedures for early intervention. Successful detectives will receive a gift as a reward.

The showcase also includes a parent-child interactive show, brought to life by energetic clowns. Families can immerse themselves in captivating stories that ignite creativity and imagination. Rounding out the experience are lively by young children, filled with joyful music that invites everyone to rediscover the magic of childhood innocence.

Why is “Child Safeguarding” Important?
Recent data from the Social Welfare Department reveals the severity of child abuse in Hong Kong—1,504 new child abuse cases were registered in 2024, marking a more than 50% increase from five years ago. While the government’s upcoming “Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse Ordinance”, set to take effect on January 20, 2026, will provide essential legal frameworks, true progress depends on more than legislation alone. It requires widespread education, heightened awareness, and unified efforts across society.
Plan International Hong Kong continues to champion “Child Safeguarding” through targeted resources, such as the “Child Safeguarding Code of Practice for Kindergartens”, an online self-learning platform, and free workshops, equipping teachers, staff, parents, and children with the knowledge to foster safer communities.
