Over 60 Students Voice out for Girls’ Rights in Youth Conference

Plan International Hong Kong – City University of Hong Kong Youth Conference 2018 was successfully held last Saturday (29 September 2018) at the City University of Hong Kong. A total of 62 students, from different secondary schools and the Department of Asian and International Studies of City University of Hong Kong, spoke about various international issues, with a special focus on girls’ situations in low income countries.

With the theme of “Fight of Girls’ Justice”, each team, representing one developing country, presented on different girls’ issues and made suggestions for improvement. Students from Sacred Heart Canossian College and Good Hope School were awarded Champion of Best Presentation Team for the Chinese section and English section respectively.

Dr. Kanie Siu, CEO of Plan International Hong Kong presented the Champion of Best Presentation Team to students from Sacred Heart Canossian College.

Dr. Linda Tjia, Assistant Professor, Department of Asian and International Studies, City University of Hong Kong presented the Champion of Best Presentation Team to students from Good Hope School.

Mr. Szeto, Board Member, Plan International Hong Kong said in the opening remarks, “The Conference is an excellent opportunity for youngsters to connect with like-minded peers to speak out about gender inequality issues, and inspire positive changes.”

Also attending the opening ceremony were Ms. Nurul Qoiriah, Head of Sub-office, International Organisation for Migration Hong Kong and Dr. Federico Ferrara, Associate Head, Department of Asian and International Studies, City University of Hong Kong.

Ms. Nurul Qoiriah, the Keynote Speaker cum the adjudicator, shed light on the issue of trafficking facing women and girls in Asia and encouraged students to continue to act for gender equality.

The conference covered a broad range of issues including girls in Rohingya refugee crisis, violence against girls in Ecuador, female genital mutilation in Egypt and so on. Dr. Kanie Siu, CEO of Plan International Hong Kong, attended the conference and acted as one of the adjudicators. Other guests serving on the panel of adjudicators included Ms. Sylvene Fong, Partner, Audit, KPMG, Ms. Luisa Tam, Senior Editor, South China Morning Post, Dr. Linda Tjia, Assistant Professor, Department of Asian and International Studies, City University of Hong Kong, Dr. K.K. Yuen, Executive Manager, UNESCO Hong Kong Association and Dr. Jun Zhang, Assistant Professor, Department of Asian and International Studies, City University of Hong Kong.

After the presentation, students answered questions from the floor.

Youth Conference 2018 included a new “Tertiary Division” with participants from the Department of Asian and International Studies of City University of Hong Kong.
