Parent-Child Education: Father Journeyed to Developing Countries, Inspiring Love and Kindness in His Children

Do you want your children to become both knowledgeable and compassionate? Parent-child education is key. Like many parents, Wai and his wife, who have a 15-year-old son and a 11-year-old daughter, firmly believe that intellectual learning and moral guidance are equally important. While providing their children with educational resources, they also place great emphasis on nurturing empathy and kindness.

Beyond his role as a father, Wai has been a keen supporter of charitable causes for many years. He first encountered Plan International at a street fundraising counter thirteen years ago. He learned about the hardships faced by children in developing countries and decided to became a donor, hoping to make a difference in their lives.

Exploring the World and Sharing Experiences with His Children

Over the past 13 years, Wai has been a dedicated supporter of Plan International’s work in disadvantaged communities and has joined our donor trips thrice, travelling to developing countries to witness first-hand the challenges local children face. These journeys revealed a world often unseen. “The most memorable scene for me was seeing children in northern Thailand using sand and stones as toys in 2020. It made me think of my own son back home and reminded me how fortunate children in Hong Kong are with their abundant resources,” he reflected.

Upon returning from the mountainous region of northern Thailand, Wai eagerly shared his experiences with his children. He showed them photos of the living conditions of children there, helping his son and daughter better understand the stark contrasts.

During his first donor trip in 2020, visiting underprivileged children in northern Thailand left Wai many touching moments.

“From the genuine and shocking photos, my children learned that the underprivileged children are eager to learn despite inadequate school facilities and families struggling in slums. These images left a deep impression and kindled their spontaneous desire to help vulnerable children,” Wai recounted.

Nurturing Compassion and Allowing Kindness to Take Root

While sharing the experiences with his son, Wai encouraged him to reflect— “What can we do for these children?” “Families in the mountainous regions of northern Thailand live in extreme poverty, and many children lack identification documents, meaning they cannot access medical benefits. Plan International supports these children and helps them obtain citizenship so that they can enjoy medical and other benefits,” he explained. Through this example, Wai helped his son appreciate the significance of Plan International’s community development work. His son was deeply inspired and expressed his intention to join the “Kids Sponsor Kids – Child Sponsorship Programme”. As his son was only ten years old, he had limited pocket money. Wai encouraged him to donate one-third of his Lai See money, while the parents could cover the remaining two-thirds. This arrangement gave his son a real sense of involvement and taught him to manage resources responsibly and own his decisions.

After another visit to Cambodia, Wai’s daughter was moved by the plight of children there and offered to sponsor children. When asked which country’s children she wanted to sponsor, she replied without hesitation, “Brazil! I love football!” This innocent response was filled with love and blessings for children far away.

Wai’s children regularly receive letters and photos from the children they sponsor. His daughter shared, “Although the child I sponsor is still a baby who cannot write yet, her mother writes to me on her behalf. Watching her grow through photos and letters makes me feel very happy!”

Sowing Seeds of Kindness to Reap Love and Growth

Wai is delighted to see that, through participating in the “Kids Sponsor Kids – Child Sponsorship Programme”, his children have become more grateful and learned the value of appreciation. He recognises that cultivating kindness in children is not an overnight task but requires long-term nurturing and genuine experiences. Through his own example, he hopes to plant seeds of kindness in his children and let them flourish in a loving environment so they can learn to care for others, and experience the joy of giving.
